The 9th Annual Parker Summer Jazz Workshop, in partnership with San Diego’s Music Box and Jazz 88.3, offers middle and high school students an opportunity to study and play music with professional jazz musicians while learning performance skills, improvisation, jazz theory and history.
One-week sessions are held at Francis Parker School's Thiemann Music Center, a state-of-the-art facility with dedicated classrooms and practice studios. Here, students grow musically as they learn to express themselves through the art of jazz improvisation.
Students give a closing performance at the Music Box, one of San Diego's premier concert venues. We welcome beginning, intermediate and advanced students at this hands-on workshop designed to nurture their growth as musicians, technically and creatively.
Students will be dropped off at Francis Parker School’s Linda Vista campus (located at 6501 Linda Vista Road) each day by 9 am. Pick up is at 2 pm for students attending the middle school ($653/$725) week and 3 pm for students attending Upper School ($788/$875) week. Price reflects the Early Bird/Regular pricing.
Lunch is available from approximately 12-12:30 pm, daily and is included in the price of tuition.
All students enrolled in the Summer Jazz Workshop will perform at the end of their respective week of practice at Music Box. The performance will be scheduled for the Saturday morning immediately following Week 1 on Saturday, July 13, and immediately following Week 2 on Saturday, July 27. These performances will serve as capstones of the students' practice sessions during the week and will feature each student playing in ensembles. Family and friends are invited to attend the Music Box performances, free of charge.
On performance Saturdays, students should be dropped off at 8:15 am and transported to Music Box by Parker bus. Pick-up following the performance will be at Music Box, time to be determined. Families should drop off their students at Francis Parker School in the morning, at 8:15 am. Following the performances, there will be an awards ceremony for students, families, friends and faculty. Families may leave with their students any time following the performance.
The Summer Jazz Workshop reserves the right to dismiss at any time, any student whose deportment or conduct is deemed to be unsafe, inappropriate and/or counter to the academic experience or to the goals of the Summer Jazz Workshop. In the instance of a dismissal (or a student withdrawal once either weekly session has begun), no refund of tuition will be issued.
