Instructor: Jason Leonard
Grade Level: For rising Grade 6-9 students
This enrichment course is a beginning Mandarin Chinese language course designed for students with no Chinese language background. Students will learn the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading and writing the Chinese language, using the Pinyin system and simplified characters. Students will be able to read, write, say and understand numbers, names, titles, time, personal descriptions, nationalities, sports, food, drinks and basic social interaction expressions. Students will also acquire an appreciation for the cultures of Chinese-speaking countries in-class lessons and activities, and understand the relationship between language and culture.
This course is designed to support and increase writing, reading, listening and speaking skills in a variety of contexts. These are presented in context and correlate directly with the Francis Parker Middle School curriculum. Students in this course will be allowed a safe space and learning environment for a difficult language while also being supported with material relevant to the Francis Parker Middle School Mandarin curriculum.
(Attendance in this course does not alter prior or current language placement assessments at Parker.)
